Backyard Gardeners are the folks who love to garden as a hobby and enjoy snacking right from the plants and maybe some cooking and baking with what they've grown.
A backyard garden is just big enough to plant most of what you enjoy and permanent enough to include fruit trees and shrubs as well as annual selections.
Start with your must haves from the menu below and then add on what else you'd like to grow! If you're short on space, remember that annuals can be grown in planters.
A well rounded backyard garden has a mix of perennial and annual plants that feed people. You'll want to start with your anchor plants such as a fruit tree or two and add some shrubs and/or vines, while also leaving room for herbs and vegetables if you can.
If you're short on space, pick your favourite! Apples need another apple or flowering crabapple within 50' (15m) for pollination. All other fruits come in self-pollinating varieties.
Blueberries, raspberries, and other favourites are perfect for snacking right off the plant.
Grapes make a great addition to backyard gardens because they can be trained to grow up fences, railings, and pergolas, helping save on space.
Save room for your favourites or consider planting in a suitable container if you're short on room in the garden.
Because we like to do things a little differently at the farm, we also enjoy offering our clients access to plants that are often only available through wholesale purchases.
Early season perennial vegetable that does best in sandy, well-drained soils. Purple and green varieties available this season.
Did someone say asiago and artichoke dip? Yes, please!
Technically not a fruit or a vegetable, but always a snacking favourite whether fresh or dried. Caution - some figs are USDA Zone 6 and will not survive winter in cooler climates.
Onions, garlic, and potatoes are easy to grow if you've got the room.
Roast beef's favourite companion, next to gravy of course!
Vines intended to thrive in our cooler climates. Yes, you really can grow your own kiwi in Ontario.
